Fit Friday: The HIIT Workout for Busy Moms

I am so pumped to have my very talented friend guest posting on MORE for the next few weeks! She is going to help us get in shape for summer, but also give us the tools we need to live more active lives. It's not about losing weight (but that may be an added benefit for some of us!)... it's about being strong, healthy and having energy so we can live our lives to the fullest!

Hello! My name is Ashley, and I am thrilled to share some fitness posts over the next few weeks on My Own Ripple Effect!

Through personally knowing Taryn, and spending lots of time pouring over her blog, I am honoured to guest-post for her and share some of the things I have learned along the way as a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor and Holistic Nutritionist.

Taryn has a heart of gold, and sets an incredible example to everyone she meets as a healthy, balanced, and educated Mom! She works hard to provide her children the BEST nutritional value for the meals she serves, and is committed to health spiritually, physically, and mentally. I look up to her as a role model in the "healthy living world" and aspire to be as humble, gracious, and compassionate one day as a mom myself.

Today, I wanted to address all the busy moms (and anyone else who has only a few spare minutes per day to devote to exercise) and talk about a type of training that will be the MOST effective in the SHORTEST amount of time; HIIT Training! HIIT stands for "High Intensity Interval Training."

Whether you have heard the term 100 times, or this is your very first time hearing this phrase, I am excited to share with you why this has become one of the best kept secrets in fat loss, increased energy, and workout effectiveness! Gone are the days of hours and hours of cardio, and through scientific research, experimentation, and results that last, HIIT training has gained popularity and credit as being one of the most effective ways to help you reach your health and fitness goals!

HIIT is a type of interval training that involves maximum intensity exercises for a short period of time; usually done in the form of intervals. It is important that you find workouts that involve high intensity intervals that push you past the upper end of your aerobic zone, combined with recovery intervals to allow your body to replenish your anaerobic energy system.

This style of training uses both your anaerobic and aerobic energy systems, challenging and strengthening your body beyond what it could do with steady state cardio. It increases your fat-burning potential because HIIT training causes metabolic adaptions that enable us to use fat as fuel for the duration of your workout. It also increases the amount of calories your body burns in its resting time because it increases the length of time it takes for your body to recover from each exercise session.

Who wouldn't want to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time?

I have put together a little workout for you to try at home, or really anywhere, with ZERO equipment necessary! This should take about 30 minutes, and before you know it, your heart will be pumping and the sweat will be dripping off your face! Remember to push yourself, but listen your body as well.

{Taryn's tip: If there are movements that you've never done before, look them up on youtube--there are lots of demos on there!}

Grab a stop watch, and challenge yourself to making this short workout count and see if you can beat your time as your body gets stronger and stronger! Each time you do one of the aerobic exercises listed in the workout below, give it your all, resting only after you have completed each section!

Good luck and keep reading to find out more about joining Taryn for her June challenge!
